"Overcoming
the crippling handicap of a lame band name that sounds like it belongs
to a race horse, these earnest young rockers somehow managed to come up
with with (1995’s) wittiest debut..."
Eric Caruncho gave us the
above...umm, accolade when he named us Best New Group of 1995 in his
year-end feature (1995 Playback: The Year in Pinoy Rock’n’Roll) for
the Sunday Inquirer Magazine. After twelve years, we still carry the
same "lame" name, but the music, proud to say, has only gotten
better and the wit is even more acid than ever. What hasn’t changed,
though, is the rate of financial returns for our kind of music, but
then, that was part of a naiveté we learned to discard early down the
road trip.
There Was No Spoon...
Most of what we did from 1989-1992 might best be summed up as the
juvenile masturbations of a fledgling band still in the process of
defining itself. It wasn’t until 1993 when the initiative to record
demo tracks at Audio Captain Studios (with the help of the late and
legendary Jun Reyes) and submit the cut Praning to LA105.9 FM (the only
radio station at the time that expressed and manifested all-out support
for Pinoy Rock) finally transformed our amateur musings into deliberate
professional cravings.
With the invaluable help of LA105 deejays like Mon "The
Doctor" Zialcita (and here we categorically state for the record
that there was absolutely no payola involved and neither was anyone in
the station related to anyone in the band - they were just truly f***ing
sincere, I guess) Praning shot up the station’s charts and held the
number one spot for six consecutive weeks. The consequent buzz paved the
way for auditions at Club DREDD, where we made it to the roster of
regulars after making enough of an impression on Pat Reidenbach. Things
were already peachy as far as we were concerned, so we didn’t really
expect that we were also going to play a part in the musical revolution
that was about to take place the following year. (read

Vincent
Lombardi of the NFL once said, "A man can be as great as he wants
to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the
determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are
willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the
things that are worthwhile, it can be done." This is what Bluewish
is made of, considering the band's humble beginnings in Bulacan,
Philippines. Bluewish band was born in 2001 as an alternative group
whose members share the same intense passion for music. The Band
composed of Yapi (Vocals), Mark (Bass), Marvin (Guitar) and Angel
(Drums) made the rounds of the local Bars, joined different Battle of
Bands and eventually moved on to perform in the city. They showcased
their raw but promising talents at these places: Freedom Bar, Café
Katipunan, KSP Grill and Mayrics, The Loft in Rockwell, Makati Palace
Hotel.
In 2003, the band decided to give their alternative pop genre an
acoustic feel. At this time Angel left the group but was replaced by VJ
on Percussions. Doing their own interpretation of their chosen songs,
Bluewish was able to present each song distinctively. This stems from
the fact that the band members are individually influenced by different
inspirations, as noted below. The said difference did not hamper the
band from doing good and unique music together as their original
compositions are not left unnoticed.
Bluewish continues to seek for greater opportunities, doing baby steps
along the way, slowly but surely. e-mail address

The Easy

It Is Fuse With Early 80s New Wave Sound of Scottish Indie (ORANGE

We started out way back in late 1995 with Albert Cruz on Vocals &

The Black
Pearl Band had its humble beginnings as overseas performing artists
travelling to other countries like Guam
U.S.A., Japan, South
Korea and some part of Middle
East countries with no actual experience in music, they were
trained in their respective instruments and tried their luck overseas.
After playing at local clubs and performing abroad for almost seven
years now, they honed their skills and have greatly improved which is
quite uncommon in all-female bands. The management saw their potential
and thus, The Black Pearl Band... beginnings was born. blackpearl_1023@yahoo.com

started out as a side
project of Bong and James, founding members of "the
bottles" (1988-1993), an avant-pop outfit (they started out as an
experimental band, writing stuff in the vein of seminal artists like
Can, Neu,
the Doors, the Velvets, Roxy
Music, David Bowie,
the Who et.al.), then mutated into a power-pop 7 man army specializing
in genre-bending opuses, not unlike what they still do in the present
Inspired by disparate musical
genres, only showcased their eclectic influences. From early 80s
synthpop (e.g. Heaven 17, Human
League, blancmange, Yazoo)
to late 80s Manc-Rock (e.g. Happy
Mondays, Stone
Roses, Inspiral
Carpets) to 90s dance music (and all its ever-increasing
sub-genres), not to mention their love of heavy
metal (they recently did a live tribute to Napalm
Death!) and old skool punk and hardcore, as well as traditional
jazz and r & b, hip-hop, and even film scores. And no, they cant be
tagged as music elitists, coz these blokes also clink their glasses to Kylie
Minogue and watch all the pop videos they can handle on TV. After
all they were once chosen as one of the bands handpicked on MTV
Asias "OUT-OF-THE-BOX"segment(1997). They also had their share
of the media with tracks played over NU107, plus countless of fanzine
articles, as well as the occasional write up on the national dailies.
And oh yeh, you might be wondering how they got their name, well it was
inspired by the Alison Anders movie, "gas, food, and lodging".
They set up their own label, DIY TAPES LTD. in 1993 (which they now
renamed to Hogtied Records). And to date they have released 8 albums
(some of 'em can still be bought via mail order), including the
soundtrack of the Alamat comicbook "Baylans" (2000) which was
commissioned by its author (jason banico). Not counting their various
compilations,notably "multiplestabwounds" which featured a
revamped hip-hop(!?) version of The Storm (orig.from their album Cut n
Paste). In 2004, they released their first e.p. "Cracked"
(Triad Records). Also on the menu, were albums from their various side
projects (e.g. fulltimebigot, Hidden Agenda RP, Half
& Half, Trotsky & the Nosebleeds, Buddha Christ).
Recently, they strutted their production skills, doing a remix project
with Manila-based metal
band Religious Nightmare. FYI, they are big fans of such studio
icons like Brian
Eno, Flood, and more notably Dan "the Automator"
Nakamura, whom they consider as a kindred
spirit in his use of lo-fi soundscapes (hey, these guys still use
their trusty Tascam 4 track cassette studio!).And in their current
incarnation as a duo (isnt it refreshing to see a non-guitar slinging
band in Pinoy Rock?), they're open to do full-length gigs (any takers
out there?), and perhaps songwriting duties for interested artists
(c'mon Im sure some of 'em could use a little indie cred). To paraphrase

markee's pet. Markee (Marc Phil d. Tiamzon) is the Vocalist and Composer
of kalachuchie.
At that time Marc and ian are only 12 years old only. IAN played the
drums, Marc on bass, and Philip on guitar. Our first vocalist is
Cherizze Pioquinto. Cherizze is the cousin of markee and ian. and
studying in Centro escolar university. she is so busy with her study, So
we decide to look for a new vocalist. But its hard to find a nice one.
so Philip sing for the meantime.
November 2007
when Jay Sandro a.k.a Gboy join us as our lead guitarist. and our first
experience to play on stage is a battle
of the band, but we're not lucky to win the battle. January
2008 when Jason Castillo join us. Jason play guitar 2.
Our musical Genre is defined as experimental. But our lyrics are mostly
emotional. Most of our songs are composed by Markee our Vocalist. He
loves writing songs when he is alone and emotionally inspired. :peace:

With Empty
Eyes is a 4-piece band playing punk
rock and alternative music. Formed with help of the website Philmusic.com
and Rakista.com,
online communities of musicians in the Philippines.
The band is formed by front man and rhythm guitarist Erwin Estrella, a
graphic artist in a recording company with influences by Blink182 and Taking
Back Sunday. Having acquired the knowledge of online sites that
helps people form their own band, he decided and dedicated himself to
make his own. After being in such bands as ThoseDamnBastards and The
Valentine Massacre, he enlisted the help of former lead guitarist of The
Valentine Massacre, Mark Boton. Mark is a Senior Associate with a liking
in Alternative music. With the help of then drummer Ron Esteban, they
recruited present members of the band "Soybeans" namely Enrick
Fernandez (Vocalist) and Neil Villocillo (Lead Guitarist). After Ron
left for Canada, and the formation of Soybeans, Erwin and Mark looked
for new members and luckily found 2 new additions.
Christopher Panaga, a Psychology student from Far
Eastern University, is now playing bass for the band. He is
influenced by such artists like Fall
Out Boy and Hit The
Lights. In drums they found an old acquaintance of Erwin, Jhoy
Macabatao, a student of HRM from Caloocan who is not just a drummer at
heart but also a Jack
of all trades by playing both bass and guitars.
With Empty Eyes has now 4 Original songs and a cover (She
Will Be Loved by Maroon
5) under its belt and still unafraid to make more..
The band's
name metaphorically implies the unending conflict of good and evil.
Ambitious as it may seem, this quartet aims to deliver their message of
hope, justice, and other ideals, and to create positive impact on other
people's lives. Their distinct sound aspires to revolutionize the
stereotype landscape of today's
music scene by bringing back the taste of 90's rock in a whole
new level. Rockspeed. Peace.
